Sunflower, named for its flower heads which turn with the sun, is an annual herbaceous plant growing 1-3.5 meters tall, with a maximum height of 9 meters.
The stem is erect, round with many edges, hard in texture, and covered with white coarse hairs.
The broadly ovate leaves are usually alternate, with a sharply pointed or gradually tapering apex, exhibiting 3 basal veins, serrated margins, rough surfaces, and hairy with long petioles. The flower heads, ranging from 10 to 30 centimeters in diameter, are solitary at the apex of stems or branches. The involucre consists of multiple layers of leaf-like bracts, densely covered with long stiff hairs.
Flowering occurs in summer, with neutral yellow ray florets arranged around the periphery of the flower head. The central part of the flower head consists of tubular florets, which are brown or purple and capable of producing seeds. The achene is oblong, with a woody pericarp, and is gray or black, commonly known as sunflower seeds.
